SOTA Weatherbot propagation forecast for trans-Atlantic s2s

The SOTA Weatherbot hosted by Dave, N7LKL https://sotaweatherbot.wordpress.com/ also includes a summit-specific propagation forecast based on a VOACAP (Voice of America Coverage Analysis Program) model using typical QRP 5 watt CW with ground-mounted vertical transmit antenna. It looks like 17M will be my best bet looking East on Saturday for trans-Atlantic s2s, likely followed by 15M. Stay well & 73! Mike, WB2FUV

World Amateur Radio Day is tomorrow (April 18)! Here's a throwback to last month when some of the team got together for a SOTA Activation of Burnaby Mountain (VE7/GV-009) while in Vancouver, BC for our all-hands meeting. #ardc #amateurradio #summitsontheair #worldamateurradioday #worldamateurradioday2026
Activations to & from Norbreck 2026 rally

I’m mostly posting this because we tried an alternative route up Bardon Hill G/CE-004, which worked for us. For the first time I tried to add a route to sotamaps, but I gave up as the height data came out haywire, but it should be obvious from the description. Bardon Hill G/CE-004: 11th April 2026 We picked Bardon Hill because the weather forecast had bands of rain crossing the country and we stood some chance of arriving after one rain band had passed and leaving before the next one arrived. ...

GM/SS-059: Car Park Exit to Hillwalk Difficulty Ratio

I’d taken the week off work, thinking that surely mid-April would be a pretty safe bet for some decent weather and good opportunities to get away into the hills. Sadly, Scottish weather had different ideas: I’m all for heading out into the clag with a compass, but there’s not a lot you can do when MWIS is suggesting 40-50mph winds fairly routinely. Tuesday was looking like the best of a bad bunch, and with hills towards the east seeming to have the best odds of catching a good day, so I opted to...

Group Activation of Upper Park (GW/MW-032) — Part III

As has been well documented here, the SOTA summit of Upper Park (GW/MW-032) sits within a private estate, and individual access had previously been almost impossible to obtain. A change in approach — whereby access was requested on a group basis, managed by someone local (@GW4BML), relieving the estate of any administrative burden and accompanied by a sizeable charitable donation — saw today mark the third group-organised activation of Upper Park. The summit draws not only SOTA activators but ...

I/LZ-097, Monte Fogliano

Activation of the Monte Fogliano SOTA I/LZ-097 summit, within the POTA reference park “IT-1706 Monte Fogliano e Monte Venere” The summit can be reached directly via the “forest road” that starts from the SP39 and crosses a beautiful beech forest to the summit (“forest road” is very bumpy but passable by car). From the summit it is possible to admire the panorama of Lake Vico below I used the XIEGU X5105 + MicroPA 100 (100 W) with a 5.2 m vertical whip antenna and six...

The pointy bits - Approaching Jane, Eyre from the South

TODO: STATS and log summaries to come The Eyre Mountains have long been my winter playground, almost since my arrival in NZ twenty-five years ago. A range of lower peaks: valley floors and sides beech-forested to 1000m. A few brief, rough tracks exist on the periphery, but beyond that this is a wooded land untracked, steep-sided valleys, leading up to open, tarn-studded post-glacial basins at their heads. The valleys are separated by broad open rock and tussock ridges, each leading up from a...

GM/CS-005: Wot, No Winter Bonus?

Easter weekend had been an absolute stinker here in Glasgow - all the forecasts had been full of talk of Storm Dave, and rightly enough Dave had brought rain, hail, gales and all sorts of rotten weather along with him. I’d essentially written the weekend off in terms of the possibility of doing anything fun outdoors, so it was a nice surprise to see that by Easter Monday, the forecasts were looking promising again, particularly to the east of the country. Schiehallion (GM/CS-005) was a Munro th...

Sheep, Poo, DX and Michael Fish

Disclaimer: There’s talk of POTA in this, so might not be of interest to anyone, but it was a dire start that turned out to be great and well worth doing I thought. Today, Easter Sunday, was one of those extremely rare occasions where I actually had a day with no other tasks or duties planned. I had a day to myself and was going to make the most of it. Out by the coast early doors with an 11km trail run in the bag by about 9:30am. All I had to do then was pack the radio gear (this would come b...

First outing with the new (to me) KX2 at W4T/SU-024 (High Rock) on the Appalachian Trail. Band conditions weren't spectacular, but I still made some great contacts and had a wonderful time.
