Would #Mandelson have ever been appointed US Ambassador had a woman, #SueGray remained #Starmer ‘s Chief of Staff?

She resigned in the autumn 2024, Mandelson was appointed in February 2025.

The shortlist she had drawn up for the post had two people - and neither was Mandelson. They were the existing holder of the post, Karen Pierce and David Miliband according to the New Statesman.

Gray like Rayner knew the stench of #Epstein was all over Mandelson…but Starmer being a man overlooked it.

‘Pestering for a role’: how Mandelson talked his way back into the Labour fold

Officials, MPs and other insiders recall a need for clarity and Blair-era frisson before election – even if Sue Gray was wary

In my view the pass was sold with the ousting of #suegray from #downingstreet early in the #starmer government. Flawed as she may have been she did at least have a basic understanding of propriety and ethics!

Some context from 2010 #SueGray BBC News - 9,000 in public sector get more pay than prime minister - BBC News
I have been reading 'Taken as Red' by #anushkaasthana . It has dated slightly because of the recent departures of #davidevans - planned - and #suegray - almost certainly unplanned. However it does contain quite a lot of valuable information and perspectives. It goes as far as the riots by the #farright a few weeks after #ukgeneralelection2024 as well as looking at the career of #morganmcsweeney in particular detail.

Sue Gray departure; it’s all kicking off in Downing Street

Following the departure of Sue Gray from her Chief of Staff post, it turns out it wasn’t just her pay that was better than anyone else’s.

Downing Street staff strip her office.

Al Pacino tells the inside story of The Godfather, and Marina Hyde on Keir Starmer, the unforced error machine – podcast

It’s hard to think of anyone who has squandered so much electoral capital, so quickly, for so little: Marina Hyde reflects on Keir Starmer’s first 100 days; and when Al Pacino bagged the lead role in The Godfather, he couldn’t believe his luck: in an exclusive extract from his new book, he recalls the making of the film that changed his life…

the Guardian

"The weekend’s big news was the vanquishing of Sue Gray, the breakout star of the Sue Gray report. Starmer’s erstwhile chief of staff has been made an “envoy”, which is an honour on a par with having “special projects” in your job title if you work in the media."

Keir Starmer is an unforced error machine – have they tried turning him off and on again?

After fewer than 100 days, it’s hard to think of anyone who has squandered so much electoral capital so quickly for so little, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde

Marina Hyde nails it, as ever.

"The sense that Labour has expended its political capital for such a tiny quantity of money and fancy things. Don’t get me wrong – 30 or 40 grand is obviously a huge amount of money in terms of clothes and luxury “eyewear” – but it is an absolutely minuscule sum to spaff almost all your electoral goodwill on."
