Ok, but speaking of that: if you find our little local instance useful (whether or not you are one of our 10 power users, maybe you just like supporting this service for others) please consider supporting our server costs with an (ideally recurring) donation at https://ko-fi.com/subduedsocial

(Perhaps last update for a while?)

After setting "remote content retention period" to 365 days, our database usage is at 11.27 GB out of 20 GB. That's not enough to let us downgrade from the $39/month plan to $19/month, but that's ok: at least now we have breathing room before we outgrow our current plan.

It feels like a lot for such a small instance, but if we have roughly 10 active users, then it's something like $4/month for our core users, so I guess that's reasonable.

#SubduedSocial

Ok, that content retention change reduced our database storage from 20GB to 17.93GB.

Since we are already now needing to suffer the consequences of some old remote messages going away, I'm going to switch our content retention period from 730 days to 365 days to see if we can get ourselves back under 10GB and onto the cheaper hosting plan. If not, at least it will buy us a lot more time before we approach 20GB again.

#SubduedSocial

I have now set the "Remote content retention period" to 730 days (two years), and we will see if that has a substantial impact on our database storage. If our database doesn't decrease significantly, I will change this to 365 days.

Admin announcement for #SubduedSocial users:

Our database usage is now past 20GB so we need to upgrade from the $39/mo plan to the $89/mo plan on @mastohost, or we start deleting old remote content (with the downside that we will lose old bookmarked toots and old DMs with other hosts).

It's a flaw in the Mastodon code that presents us with this tough choice. You can read more here: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/discussions/19260

I suggest our users make copies of any old DMs they want to keep.

#MastoAdmin

I just boosted our @mastohost plan for #SubduedSocial from the $19/month to the $39/month plan. (#SubduedSocial users can read more about it in the server announcement).

Seems like we're running into the issue with an ever-growing cache content database and the lack of the ability to delete old content but still preserve any old posts that our users have favorited or interacted with.

Thanks @hugo for drawing attention to this missing feature in Mastodon: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/discussions/19260

RE: retention policy for cached content and media · mastodon mastodon · Discussion #19260

The recent PR #19232 adding a retention policy for cached content and media can significantly reduce the resources used by Mastodon. In particular, the storage needs. This is something that admins ...

Hello fediverse and #SubduedSocial! I'm Tom, recently retired from 30 years in IT, but new to social media. I'm afraid it'll be necessary to do a little liberal political ranting in the near future, but I'm also interested in bicycling (but I'm out of shape), cats and dogs, and science fiction. I'm in Bellingham, and pleased that @alan provides this cozy server for us!

We just expanded the section in our #SubduedSocial server rules to conform to the #IFTAS guidelines against targeted misgendering and deadnaming in the fediverse.

We're getting lots of spammers signing up for accounts on #SubduedSocial (like with a lot of other small servers on the fediverse in the last day or so).

So I deactivated open registrations on our server. Now all signups will need to be approved by an admin.
