The world's first electric hydrofoil ferry is coming to Washington DC and is a game changer for urban transport. Underwater wings allow the Candela P-12 to rise up and glide above the waves, leading to significantly less drag and reducing energy consumption by up to 80%. And it has been named one of Time Magazine's Best Inventions of 2025. It offers a speedy alternative to land-based transport. A typical commute in DC from Georgetown to Reagan Airport might take 20 minutes by car, or 37 minutes on public transport. On the P-12 it would take just six minutes. And it's not just fast. It is quiet, clean and surprisingly comfortable. The computer-controlled hydrofoils deliver a ride that's smooth enough to prevent seasickness. And there is no noise or vibration from the electric motor (or diesel fumes to choke on). Operating costs are about 60% lower than diesel-powered vessels, which puts it in line with land-based options such as buses. And because it creates almost no wake, it can obtain exemptions and run at high speeds in cities like DC where shoreline erosion and speed restrictions limit traditional ferries. This enables a whole new layer of transport by opening up underused waterways. What's next? The P-12 has already been integrated into Stockholm's public transport system, where it has cut travel times in half. Similar projects are in the pipeline for Lake Tahoe, Mumbai, Thailand and Saudi Arabia. With more than 40 ships on order, the P-12 is already the world's best-selling electric passenger vessel. #energy #renewables #energytransition | 15 comments on LinkedIn
