A philosophy professor earns about thirty thousand bucks and costs maybe another five thousand a year in office space and chalk. A marine earns around fifteen thousand bucks and costs maybe another hundred thousand a year in barrack space, ammunition, transport, fuel, weapons, VA expenses, and so on. Supporting all the philosophy departments of the USA costs about as much as funding a single battalion of marines." She looks wryly amused. "They're looking for a breakthrough. Knowing how to deconstruct any opponent's ideological infrastructure and derive self-propagating conceptual viruses based on its blind spots, for example. That sort of thing would give them a real strategic edge: their psych-ops people would be able to make enemies surrender without firing a shot, and do so reliably. Cybernetics and game theory won them the Cold War, so paying for philosophers is militarily more sensible than paying for an extra company of marines, don't you think. #Stross #quotes

Es gibt durchaus noch ein paar andere SF&Fantasy Autor*innen, die auch Serien schreiben/schrieben, deren Bücher auch einzeln Sinn machen.

Beispiele, die mir auf Anhieb einfallen:

Louis McMasters Bujold: Die Vorkosigan Saga

Jasper FForde: Friday Next Serie

Marion Zimmer Bradley: Darkover

Charles Stross: Laundry Files

PWYW can mean free or it can mean a couple of dollars. I don't really mind. :) It's got unicorns (from Beagle to Stross) big tree people and tiny murder sprites and tinkerbells as well. I write other stuff too. 😀 Some really good stuff. 😀

Saturn's Children by Charles Stross - book review - Themself

This is the 10th of the 40 books I got for my birthday. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and got through it faster than I expected. The review below contains spoilers (below the cut). This is a relatively hard SF book that explores ideas around a post-human robot civilisation with themes of slavery, corruption and what it is that makes tick. The plot that does this is like a corkscrew and at times it takes surprising directions. [DN: link to Charlie’s blog post here. ] The key characters in the story are robots (although they mostly avoid that as a term, seeing it as a strong pejorative). They come in lineages sharing a common template personality which is then modified by their experiences. All of the main characters are humanoid generalists and so are of the people in a mask […]
