California Assembly Bill 1014
#AB1014
#SlowSpeedsSaveLives

Just today a woman who bikes sent me a video showing a motor vehicle as it struck her at the end of West Broadway Urban Village in Seaside. We shuddered to think how much more she’d have suffered if it were going faster.

"So far, the bill has faced no registered opposition and has drawn support from a broad coalition, including the California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike, Rural County Representatives of California and Streets Are For Everyone. Supervisor Chris Lopez has also shown support for the proposal.” —Report by KYARRA HARRIS in #MontereyHerald

Supervisors weigh support for traffic bill aimed at reducing speed limits

AB 1014 is designed to empower local leaders to prioritize safety concerns.

Many California drivers don’t know CA laws—e.g., that since 1 Jan 2023, drivers of all motor vehicles are to change lanes when passing someone on a bicycle whenever feasible, just as they would if passing a car.

We often wish CA DMV Handbook, etc. stressed bike-friendly driving, share-the-road rights of people who bike, etc. (Likewise for #CHP’s #StartSmart and other state driver’s ed efforts!)

If you share that wish—or are simply a California driver—take this SURVEY:

https://www.streetsareforeveryone.org/safe-events/driving-laws-survey

Why? Streets Are For Everyone (SAFE) is doing a research project about #California drivers’ knowledge of #driving laws. SAFE's goal is to have data on what laws #drivers retain after taking their CA #DMV driving test and what newer laws they're aware of. SAFE states that “once the survey is completed with sufficient responses, it will be used to propose legislation about how CA DMV should provide #ContinuingEducation for new and existing #driving laws.”

SAFE is conducting a research project focused on California drivers’ knowledge, and want you and your networks to take our survey! This survey will be the basis of SAFE-sponsored legislation to update drivers on new laws and promote safety for all road users. Please take 5 minutes to answer these q

Streets Are For Everyone
For my final applied anthropology paper I'm working on what, if any, cultural factors keep American cities from becoming more bike-friendly, especially as it relates to commuting for work and daily life.
Obviously this is something I'm very interested in from the start, not only because I love cycling, but also because I come from a home where my dad used his bike for precisely all those things.
