This week I wrote to #bencarroll, following up on my previous email, regrading the increasing violence in our neighbourhood. I hope this time he acknowledges the genuine fear of his constituents and isn't too busy now as Deputy Premier, to acknowledge us.

"Dear Mr Carroll,

I write to you today to follow up on my correspondence dated 30.09.23 and attached below. As of today, I have still not received a reply from you with regards to the traumatising incident, that occurred in Keilor. Many are still trying to cope with the events of that day, but worse still, since I wrote to you we have experienced a second shooting; which happened to occur just two streets away from where I live, and the fatal hit and run of a 16 year old boy in Taylors Lakes.
Residents are terrified! We rightfully want to know what our government is doing to protect us and our families and it is unfathomable to me, that you have remained silent on the issue and failed to reach out, or even acknowledge residents impacted by these violent attacks in our suburban streets. Are you now too busy to address your own constituents?

I sincerely hope that you consider meeting with these impacted communities as I originally invited you to do, but at the very least, I hope to receive a reply from you this time.

Regards,
Shannon Meilak"

"People always wanna know the reason for what they consider senseless violence in the hood. I'ma break it down for you."
Somebody brought up This Is Why We Ride by Body Count, and it's made me think about #StreetViolence and its surrounding discourse. “Senseless violence” is an outsider judgement that does not consider insider lived experiences, plus expresses the belief there is no solution nor responsibility on their part. I think the spoken section in the middle is particularly powerful. Stylistically it reminds me very much of RATM, but more #metal (though not really that heavy as things go). And yes, contains swearing. #music #rap

“To condemn the #rioting—which I believe to be a moral and political imperative—is not at all the same thing as opposing the #protests. Many observers have been reluctant to do the former because they wish to avoid the latter. I maintain that this is a grave mistake. […] #Progressive intellectuals who make excuses for #streetviolence, even in the face of the awful killing of #GeorgeFloyd, are making a monumental moral and political error.”

Condemn this Violence without Equivocation - Quillette

I thank God that the brutal and senseless killing of George Floyd—an unarmed black man—by the white Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, was captured on video for all the world to see. That shocking episode provides irrefutable evidence—yet again—of the callous, corrupt, and inhumane practices that are being used by some of those to whom we have granted the fearsome authority and weighty responsibility of policing the streets of our cities. Chauvin’s behavior (and that of his fellow officers, who are depicted in the video standing idly by for what seems like an eternity, while Chauvin casually kneels on Floyd’s neck choking the life out of him) is contemptible, enraging, and entirely unacceptable. This would be true, of course, regardless of the victim’s or the policeman’s race. Yet, given our country’s history, when the murderous cop is white and the dead civilian is black, it is truer still. So, it is essential that those who committed this apparent crime be held accountable in a duly constituted court and, should they be found guilty, punished to …
