Tonight is the first Friday Night Market of the summer. I’ll be doing twelve consecutive Friday nights vending at a local street fair here in Eureka, CA, selling my greeting cards and prints.
Last year was my first experience doing so at all. I’d never put art out there like I did that first time. And it was life-changing.
Tonight, I go to have fun and enjoy the music, food, crafts, and people I meet. Tonight is about joy, not sales.
Because in today’s world, artists have to link themselves to their art in a way that can’t be so easily obliterated into irrelevance like generative slop does. Slop depends on the commoditization of creativity, separating the artist out of the process entirely in favor of a finished product.
And Art can’t be that way anymore. We cannot be anonymous introverts working hard to share things simply to to be posted to an endless scroll of imagery for the entertainment of bored people looking for distraction in the moment.
Artists can’t hide anymore. To sell their art, they must make human connections. They must engage in their communities and find ways to say, “Yes, I actually made this. This is how and why.”
So tonight is going to be about positivity, home, creativity, and fun. And meeting people to enjoy them as much as I relish making art.
