The slow-changing color on my SG lowland Nepenthes truncata; it’ll finish out with an almost solid bronze peristome.
Not the biggest trap it’s made, but at almost 11 inches it’s close.

They’re tiny now, but hold so much potential…I only had two seedlings of Sarracenia flava maxima x psittacina okefenokeensis (ie. x crispata) sprout when I made the cross, and they got moved outside this spring. One is the obvious vigorous one, and bright lemon yellow to boot so it should be wild looking when mature.
The other though…caught my attention even more, because though small, it’s got leaves that are ghostly pale cream instead. If it survives, it will undoubtedly be the weirdest looking plant in the pool.

A future giant in the making: Nepenthes rajah x attenboroughii. Only just reaching the size where traits of both parents can really be seen, but right now it’s also demonstrating that while most carnivores can skate by without feeding much…many will absolutely grow better and faster with proper fertilizing. Those two new leaves were after a small osmocote pellet was thrown in a trap, and they’re significantly bigger than the previous ones. So’s the newest pitcher.

New video out!
This week's plant spotlight is on one of the most veriable species in the genus Nepenthes: N. maxima! There's a size and color form for everyone with this one, and with such a massive range in habitats and elevations it's a pretty easy one too!

The new king of the pool…
I don’t know what triggered the sudden massive jump, but this Sarracenia leucophylla x alata “nigropurpurea” has suddenly developed the tallest trap in the entire pool…and it’s still growing. My hands are around 7 inches long and it’s almost 3 hands tall already.

The Songdog’s back, and he’s helping showcase two very closely related species that got filmed for upcoming videos: Nepenthes copelandii and cornuta! Both are endemic to Mindanao and part of the alata complex, but unlike most of their relatives their upper pitchers are completely differently shaped from the lowers. These two also have kind of swapped sizes; copelandii ends up with big lowers and much smaller uppers, while cornuta has smaller lowers but pretty sizable uppers.

Nepenthes (lowii x talangensis) x vogelii, HC A, has officially earned title of Skinniest Pitcher in the greenhouse, somehow beating out bokorensis. Literally looks like it got stuck in a taffy puller.

Nepenthes ‘Helen’ x spectabilis PB, HC A with new lower pitchers.
This clone routinely makes chunky lowers with moderately flared and ruffled peristomes, and has nice high contrast when it first opens but the real show comes as it ages, when the peristome stripes turn black but so does the edge of the lip, fading to red and yellow inward. And, it’s a known fertile female (though sometimes picky about making good seeds; they occasionally just make wacky mutated pods instead).
There’s one rooted cutting left on the website Shop too…maybe with a second to be added once it starts growing out.

Two plants of similar stature, but differing certainty: the first was received as Sarracenia flava ornata, but the ruffled lid, thick neck, and shorter curling phyllodia make me think not pure (though it has proven to make some really nice hybrids). Second is Mike Wang’s flava ornata “Improved,” and as you can see by the damaged early trap especially it has a lot of intense vein potential in it. This one is a known pure flava, but I have yet to be able to cross it with anything to see what it does to offspring.

This week's midweek plant spotlight is a Giant of the Marsh pitcher genus: Heliamphora neblinae! An impressive plant when grown well, though due to size alone perhaps a little tricker to care for.
