Saturday Story and Connection

I was stuck this week thinking I couldn’t start until I was ready. I’m photographing trains for a children’s book and couldn’t see a safe way to make one look like it was out in the countryside. I kept thinking of technical fixes and got nowhere. Then I walked to the end of the platform and saw the shot appear. The real problem was the belief that I had to be ready first, when the truth was I wasn’t ready until I started.

Story and Connection

When I first traveled Europe by train, I came home feeling as if I’d hunted saber-tooth tigers. There only danger was the risk of missing a train, misreading a sign, or ending up a the wrong city. I came back more alive than when I left.

Every so often, I still take a trip into the unknown, not always trains. Maybe that’s what we all need to do, once in a while, take a step into the unknown to remind ourselves what we’re capable of.

Students often ask for certainty, as if life follows fixed rules. They want to know which choice is right, what works best, or how to guarantee results. My honest answer always begins the same way: “It depends”.

The great thing about answering like this is that it helps people start to look closer, to think for themselves, and to begin questioning their own patterns. In reality the question is: “Are you ready to start asking questions about your question?”
