We've just had #StormAshley make some significant rearrangements to our coastline here on Seil.
It occurred to me that, because summer hasn't been good this year, the sea wasn't warmed as much as it might have been; if the sea surface had been warmed by another couple of degrees - not unusual - would the extra energy available have boosted Storm Ashley to be much more violent, with much worse results for the west coast of #Scotland & all the islands of Britain and Ireland?

There's a road under that beach somewhere

While walking Sandy the deaf BC today in the aftermath of #StormAshley, I was taken by the patterns of the swirled grass which brought the brush strokes of V. Van Gogh to mind. The colours in the original photos seemed (aptly, given the circumstances) rather washed out; so I tweaked them on my phone.
I think there are possibilities here...

Storm Ashley was definitely making its presence felt over Derwent Water yesterday.
Swirls of water dancing on the surface as mini tornadoes formed and banks of haze over 30 feet tall being dragged across the lake as the wind rushed through Borrowdale and up towards Skiddaw.
The most brutal conditions I've ever shot in and some of the toughest light so here's a quick snippet. Compositionally poor, but the feeling of being there in the moment was astounding!

Just found the biggest pine cone I’ve ever seen in my garden. It must have been blown there by #StormAshley as there are no fir trees nearby. Good job nobody was out there at the time as it could have done them a serious injury! 😵‍💫
Yesterday I did the Yorkshire marathon. It was great despite the storm winds and continual rain! Lots of friendly folks running, lots of spectators with sarcastic signs. I had the most Yorkshire conversation ever at the start: “bit nippy this morning” “Just wait until the freezing driving rain gets you, that’ll do it”. I really regret not escalating with “I dream of freezing driving rain, back in my day…” #montypython #YorkshireMarathon #hypothermia #stormashley
We got away lightly here in #Maynooth with #stormashley, sure, it was a deeply unpleasant walk, but all I saw was some small windfall like this fir cone.
Phew, wind was supplying more than 60% of GB electricity as #StormAshley blew through overnight
