#Cello-playing #ClimateActivist arrested at #NewYork #Citibank #protest as crackdown escalates

Second activist also arrested during ‘summer of heat’ protest against second largest financier of #FossilFuels

"A 63-year-old climate activist and professional cellist faces up to seven years in #prison after being arrested on Thursday while performing a Bach solo outside the headquarters of one of the world’s largest fossil fuel financier Citibank in downtown New York.

"#JohnMarkRozendaal, a former Princeton professor, and #AlecConnon, director of the climate nonprofit group #StopTheMoneyPipeline, were arrested for criminal contempt in the public park at the bank’s global headquarters as the crackdown against #nonviolent climate protesters escalates.

"Rozendaal was handcuffed and led away to the police vehicle singing 'we are not afraid, we are not afraid, we will sing for liberation because we know why we were made'. The crowd of protesters chanted 'let him play' and “ shame on you Citibank”.

"Thirteen other climate activists, who had linked arms in a circle around Rozendaal to protect him as he played Bach’s suites for cello, were detained for alleged obstruction of governmental administration, a misdemeanor criminal charge. 'People are dying … today is my birthday,' said Mike Bucci, 77, teary eyed as the police in #RiotGear broke up the protest.

"Since 10 June, climate activists have been peacefully protesting against Citibank’s record financial support for new fossil fuel projects as part of the Summer of Heat on Wall Street campaign. At least 3,700 people have participated in the nonviolent civil disobedience, repeatedly blockading the entrance to its global headquarters. More than 475 people including faith leaders, scientists and elders have been arrested while calling on Citi to stop bankrolling new #coal, #oil and #gas.

"Citi is the second largest financier of fossil fuels and the largest financier of fossil fuel expansion since the 2015 Paris climate agreement, according to the latest Banking on #ClimateChaos report.

"The latest arrests come as climate advocates accuse Citibank and the #NYPD of coordinated and escalating efforts to suppress nonviolent protests in retaliation for drawing attention to the banking giant’s key role in funding fossil projects globally."

'Summer of Heat' to Take Aim at Wall Street for Funding Climate Chaos | Common Dreams

"We know that they're enabling the fossil fuel industry, and we know that to end the fossil fuel era, banks like Citibank must stop funding fossil fuels," an organizer said.

Sign and send this urgent petition: Stop insuring Rio Grande LNG now!

Rio Grande LNG (liquid “natural” gas, or LNG) is a proposed methane gas export terminal slated for Brownsville, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley. This project, and the proposed Texas LNG and Rio Bravo Pipeline, is a clear case of environmental racism with enormous, devastating impacts on community health, Indigenous rights, endangered species, and our shared climate. There’s nothing “natural” about methane gas expansion. Methane gas has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after it reaches the atmosphere. Methane is highly volatile, and this build-out poses especially dangerous explosion risks. Further, the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, who are the original Indigenous people of the region, have not given their Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) for Rio Grande LNG. The proposed terminal will support the continued environmental racism in the Gulf by perpetuating the displacement, pollution, and physical harm of impacted communities. It is imperative that the supporting insurance companies listen to Indigenous and impacted communities. And time is running out for transformative action to tackle the climate crisis. Despite climate and community impacts and years of community resistance, Rio Grande LNG is set to move forward. Big Insurers like Chubb, Liberty Mutual, and Sompo have the power to stop this project by refusing to insure it and all methane expansion. They have a responsibility to listen to Indigenous and impacted communities and make crucial changes for people and the planet by publicly ruling out methane and Rio Grande LNG immediately, before the insurance renewal on March 1, 2024. We need meaningful climate solutions before it’s too late. Sign and send the petition to the insurers connected to this project: Listen to impacted communities and publicly drop Rio Grande LNG before the insurance renewal on March 1, 2024. TELL COSTCO TO CLEAN UP ITS CREDIT CARD

Call on Costco to drop dirty bank Citi as its credit card partner because of Citi’s role in funding catastrophic climate change. Did you know? Costco’s credit cards are issued by Citi - one of the dirtiest banks on the planet. Citi pumps billions into building new oil, gas, and coal projects that are creating toxic air pollution and worsening deadly fires, floods, hurricanes, and extreme heat. Since 2016, Citi has provided more than $332 billion in financing polluting fossil fuel companies, threatening our homes, our jobs and our lives. Costco is a big, popular company -- more than 30% of Americans are Costco shoppers (and who doesn't love the free samples!). Its motto is "do the right thing", and it's already made several climate commitments. Costco can continue to solidify its lovable brand by dropping its toxic partnership with Citi. What Costco must do Costco, as a huge client of Citi, can contribute to climate solutions by telling Citi if it doesn’t stop funding fossil fuels, then Costco will drop the bank as its credit card issuer. Costco should not let Citi undermine its own climate actions or harm Costco members, workers, or communities who are being devastated by climate impacts. What you can do Sign this petition to tell Costco that it needs to drop Citi as its credit card issuer if Citi doesn’t clean up its act. Costco has a history of listening to its paying members and caring about its public reputation. So, let’s make sure Costco hears from members and non-members alike! By signing this petition you will be taking a stand for a healthier future for your family, your friends and your community. Why I love Costco and wish they would clean up their credit card

I recently learned that Costco’s credit cards are issued by Citi, which is one of the biggest funders of fossil fuels. People Power United members we need your help to ask Costco to do better.

People Power United: America's Progressive Voice & Actions
When I received a credit card application from Wells Fargo recently, I returned it with a note explaining I would consider doing business with them once they stopped financing oil & gas projects. I received this bullshit letter in response, explaining that they've increased their due diligence on those projects. In other words, they assess the risks to life on earth and then fund the projects regardless. #StopTheMoneyPipeline #ClimateCrisis
It's so frustrating to see leading #climate scientists doing webinars with Chase Bank folks. These types of public events give banks credibility they don't deserve, and #greenwash their destructive lending practices. #stopthemoneypipeline
