Stop Censoring Abortion: Documenting Social Media Suppression of Reproductive Health Information

When we launched Stop Censoring Abortion, our goals were to understand how social media platforms were silencing abortion-related content, gather data and lift up stories of censorship, and hold social media companies accountable for the harm they have caused to the reproductive rights movement. Here are the key lessons from this campaign:

“We reached out to Meta and came to the conclusion that almost none of the content that was reported to us actually violated their community standards,” EFF’s Lisa Femia told Medical Marketing + Media Magazine of our #StopCensoringAbortion project. https://www.mmm-online.com/news/meta-censoring-of-abortion-ads-healthcare-marketing/

As many social media platforms are removing content about reproductive rights, #Vebinet is not doing so and will never take #censorship action as reproductive rights are human rights.

Whether it's educational #content, updates on laws or essential guidances and other resources, the content will remain online without risk of being banned.

Unlike #Facebook, #Instagram, #X (formerly #Twitter) and #TikTok, our moderation is not targeting people for publishing factual content.

Public access to vital #healthcare information, including related to reproductive rights, is essential and should be preserved.

Across nearly 100 submissions to our #StopCensoringAbortion survey, we saw systemic over-enforcement, convoluted policies, sudden account bans, and ignored appeals. On Friday, leaders from EFF, Plan C, M+A Hotline, and Women on Web will discuss what’s happening and the future of sharing info online.

At a time when abortion rights are under attack, platforms with enormous resources—like Meta—have no excuse for silencing this important speech. We must push platforms to #StopCensoringAbortion. https://www.eff.org/pages/platforms-have-failed-us-abortion-content-heres-how-they-can-fix-it

At the end of our #StopCensoringAbortion campaign, our findings reveal censorship in action: platforms’ moderation systems are not only broken, but are actively harming those seeking and sharing vital reproductive health information.
