The awe-inspiring Ruthwell Cross in Dumfries & Galloway, the most magnificent Anglian cross in Scotland. It is 17ft tall and was carved in the 700s at a time when the area was under the control of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria. A curious sheep photobombing my pic of Huntingdon Cross.

The cross is originally thought to have been erected as a waymarker on the Abbot’s Way between the abbeys at Buckfast and Tavistock. Later used by a landowner to mark the boundary of his manor 🙄 (http://www.dartmoor-crosses.org.uk/huntingdon.htm).

I missed it last time I was here - I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face let alone a stone cross. It made for a sunny lunch spot on the banks of the River Avon today.
