Strikes across Gaza kill at least 92 as Israel prepares to ramp up its offensive
Officials say Israeli strikes across Gaza have killed at least 92 people, including women, children and two journalists, one the father of a newborn. Two strikes on Wednesday targeted a crowded area in central Gaza City near a busy market, while one earlier at a second school killed 16, hospital officials said. An attack Tuesday night on a school sheltering hundreds of displaced Palestinians killed 27 people. The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the strikes. This came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday there is “doubt” about the survival of three hostages previously believed alive in Gaza.
Israeli strikes kill 17 in Gaza and destroy heavy equipment needed to clear rubble
Israeli strikes have killed at least 17 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, mostly women and children, and destroyed bulldozers and other heavy equipment that had been supplied by mediators to clear rubble. Separate strikes on Tuesday killed two people in Lebanon. Israel’s 18-month offensive against Hamas has destroyed vast areas of Gaza, raising fears that much of it may never be rebuilt. The territory already had a shortage of heavy equipment, which is also needed to rescue people from the rubble after Israeli strikes and to clear vital roads.
Israel detains director of northern Gaza hospital, Palestinians say
Gaza's Health Ministry says Israel’s army has detained the director of one of northern Gaza's last functioning hospitals. The announcement on Saturday came after health officials said Israeli troops stormed the hospital on Friday and forced many staff and patients outside and told them to strip in winter weather. Israel’s army didn’t respond to questions about the hospital director. It denied it had entered or set fire to the complex but acknowledged it had ordered people outside. It said it was conducting operations against Hamas in the area. The military repeated claims that Hamas militants operate inside Kamal Adwan Hospital, which officials there have denied.
