https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/01/stewart-cheifet-pbs-host-who-chronicled-the-pc-revolution-dies-at-87/ First thought was Oh no... but considering age I just wanted to say rest in peace sir, you've made multiple of generations curious about computers and you'll be remembered
I really don't think I'd be in #IT and #SoftwareDevelopment if it weren't for the #CorporationForPublicBroadcasting #CPB #PBS, especially #StewartCheifet's #ComputerChronicles & #NetCafe, #RobertXCringely's #TriumphOfTheNerds and #NerdsTwoPointOhOne #ABriefHistoryOfTheInternet.
Our first #TV was a tiny B&W Sony that my grandfather had bought for my parents (later used with my #VIC20.) Our first color TV had broken audio, so set ontop of a B&W TV with no picture but working sound. No joke.
Why does the #CorporationForPublicBroadcasting dissolution feel like such a hard blow? Less than a month after #StewartCheifet's passing, whose #ComputerChronicles & #NetCafe were partially funded by the #CPB and aired on #PBS, no less!
Growing up, I had books, radio, and over-the-air TV. I experienced computers through family, friends, school, and _especially_ #TV. My first computers were hand-me-downs (a #Commodore #VIC20, then an #IBM #PS2). I didn't get #Internet until much later.
Yesterday, while working on infrastructure updates that ultimately ended up taking _much longer_ than anticipated, I queued up some #ComputerChronicles episodes in honor of #StewartCheifet's recent passing (2025-12.)
One of the selected episodes was "The Ultimate Gamer's PC" (2001-06-05):

Extra gut punch around 19:11 when he interviews #GordonMahUng who passed away in late 2024-12:

Stewart got ~29 more years than Gordon.
