The Pogues producer Steve Lillywhite: ‘Fairytale of New York is like a fine wine, it grows on you!’

As a recording of the first live performance of the immortal Christmas song is released, the legendary producer and ex-husband of Kirsty MacColl reflects on what makes it so special. As told to Roisin O’Connor

Big Country, The Crossing, 1983 on Mercury

Debut album by Scotland’s Big Country, which charted at number 18 in the US, and contains the song “In a Big Country.” Produced by Steve Lillywhite and recorded in London and Oxford.

The opening of that track – “In a Big Country” – is just indelibly etched in my early 80s memory. I’m sure they tired of the comparison of their guitar sound to bagpipes, but it certainly stood out and somehow felt Scottish to me.

My copy—via a record fair at Mill No. 5 in Lowell MA—is a Hauppauge pressing (note the “53” at the beginning of the rim text) from 1983.

Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (Melt)

Far and away my favorite Peter Gabriel album, featured previously in a 45RPM remaster. This is my original copy from 1980.

Same comments apply, of course, except for one additional thing - this copy has always had some non-fill on the lead-off No Self Control, and it's amazing how much I remembered it was there, and how it incorporated itself into my memory of the track.
