Если смотреть на этот документ через призму социальной сатиры и анализа бюрократических практик, он превращается в почти безупречный пример институциональной иронии.

Формально Джобс отвечает отказом. Однако сам отказ оформлен в виде письма, которое он собственноручно подписывает. В результате возникает любопытный парадокс: сообщая о невозможности предоставить автограф, он одновременно оставляет на документе именно ту самую подпись, которую и стремился получить адресат.

В этом заключается вся прелесть ситуации. Вместо того чтобы просто расписаться на фотографии или чистом листе бумаги, Джобс переводит запрос в пространство официальной переписки. Здесь его подпись перестаёт быть сувениром для поклонника и превращается в элемент делового документооборота — в своеобразную «авторизацию отказа». С юридической и корпоративной точки зрения просьба отклонена, но с фактической — заявитель всё равно получает документ с подлинной подписью Джобса.

I just happen to be finishing reading while at our friends’s cabin on the shores of Swan Lake very near Lake Vermillion where most of the book was written. A wonderful place to be a writer.

Reading Steve Jobs in Exile — The Untold Story of NeXT and the Remaking of an American Visionary by Geoffrey Cain.

Just started chapter 25, which begins in August 1996. Apple CEO Gil Amelio is struggling with what to do with Copland, their latest OS in development.

Found a bit of an anachronism:

“But without a modern OS, Apple users were left stuck in the dark ages, facing the spinning beach ball of death every time an application froze.“
