Il suo piccolo corpo sembra in equilibrio precario e invece è perfettamente adattato al suo mondo. Stiamo parlando di Grub, un gattino diventato noto sui social, che convive con una rarissima patologia genetica. A raccontarne la storia è stato per primo il sito Bored Panda lo scorso 25 marzo, poi ripreso da altri media anglosassoni e arrivato nelle ultime settimane anche su quelli italiani. Ma più che la malattia, una mucopolisaccaridosi di tipo VII, nota come sindrome di Sly, a colpire è il rapporto costruito giorno dopo giorno con Stephanie, la donna che ha scelto di prendersene cura.
Non è stata sempre Stephanie a occuparsi del piccolo micio: quando i suoi precedenti proprietari si sono accorti che non cresceva normalmente lo hanno portanto in un rifugio e proprio il rifugio ha contattato un’organizzazione di recupero animali con cui Stephanie collaborava. Non si è decisa subito, la vita era già frenetica senza Grub. Eppure continuava a pensare a lui. Alla fine è andata a prenderlo: “Mi sono innamorata in 24 ore”.
La condizione di Grub incide soprattutto sullo sviluppo fisico: pesa poco più di due chili, ha ossa più fragili e una conformazione che lo costringe a muoversi in modo particolare. Anche gesti semplici richiedono attenzione. La respirazione, ad esempio, può diventare complicata e l’ambiente in cui vive deve essere costantemente adattato per evitare rischi.
Se qualcuno sta pensando che sia tutto questo a definire la quotidianità del micio si sbaglia: Stephanie racconta che è curioso, affettuoso, sempre desideroso di partecipare a quello che succede intorno a lui. Attraverso il profilo Instagram dedicato a lui, seguito da utenti in diversi Paesi, la sua storia ha iniziato a circolare sempre di più. Non grandi imprese o momenti eccezionali, ma frammenti di vita quotidiana: piccoli spostamenti, momenti di riposo, interazioni semplici. “La vita con lui è una questione di qualità, non di quantità”, ha spiegato Stephanie.

His small body seems in a precarious balance, but it is perfectly adapted to his world. We’re talking about Grub, a kitten who has become known on social media, who lives with a very rare genetic condition. The Bored Panda website first told the story on March 25th, followed by other English-language media and, in recent weeks, Italian ones as well. But more than the illness, a mucopolisaccharidoses of type VII, known as the Sly syndrome, it's the relationship built day after day with Stephanie, the woman who chose to care for him, that strikes.
Stephanie wasn’t always the one caring for the little kitten: when her previous owners realized he wasn’t growing normally, they took him to a shelter and the shelter contacted an animal rescue organization with which Stephanie collaborated. She didn’t decide immediately; life was already hectic without Grub. Yet she kept thinking about him. In the end, she went to get him: “I fell in love in 24 hours.”
Grub’s condition mainly affects physical development: he weighs just over two kilograms, has fragile bones, and a conformation that forces him to move in a particular way. Even simple gestures require attention. For example, his breathing can become complicated, and the environment in which he lives must be constantly adapted to avoid risks.
If someone thinks that all this defines the cat’s daily life, they’re wrong: Stephanie says he is curious, affectionate, and always eager to participate in what’s happening around him. Through the Instagram profile dedicated to him, followed by users in different countries, his story began to circulate more and more. Not grand feats or exceptional moments, but fragments of everyday life: small movements, moments of rest, simple interactions. “Life with him is a matter of quality, not quantity,” Stephanie explained.
