- In 2014, 422 million adults worldwide lived with diabetes—almost four times more than in 1980.
- Diabetes prevalence has nearly doubled globally, especially rising faster in low and middle-income countries.
- Every 5 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes; every 10 seconds, someone dies from it; every 30 seconds, a limb is lost due to diabetes complications.
Diabetes affects all ages—from childhood to older adulthood. It is a serious condition that can cause blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, and amputation. But the good news is:
✅ A healthy diet
✅ Regular physical activity
✅ Maintaining a healthy weight
✅ Avoiding tobacco use
can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. Early diagnosis, medication, and regular screening help manage diabetes and avoid complications.
This year’s theme, "Diabetes Across Life Stages," highlights the importance of care and support for everyone living with diabetes at every stage of life.
Let’s raise awareness and support diabetes prevention and care worldwide!
