This dog, y'all. She is a treasure. Took advantage of the mild day to take Gigi & her poodle friend Iris for a romp in the woods.
Iris doesn't leave a 1 foot radius around me - which can be a problem! Gigi has hound in her DNA & the lure of 54 acres is too hard to ignore.
Since it's both mud season + critters are waking up from winter, I didn't want her roaming. I took her on a long lead & practiced recall with a high value special treat - dried fish skins.
She did great!
We had a morning visitor. This lovely fox trotted along the fence line of our back yard sitting area. It was completely unconcerned by the dog barking maniacally at it from the kitchen. I was enchanted. Gigi was not amused.
Good morning! It's a winter wonderland. After a week away visiting family, we came home last night to a snow covered landscape. As the sun rises over the treetops, the world is sparkling and bright.
Another 4-6 inches of lovely powdery snow today. Looking like a proper New England winter out there.
It's taken an embarrassingly long time to finally get this amazing art piece hung in the house. Designed and created by my dear friend who has mad skills & a discerning eye.
She chose fabrics to help tell a story - the cobblestone pathway has pieces w/ a map of NYC alternating w/ chickens & ducks & the word 'quack'.
It's in pride of place in the room we spend our evenings in, next to the family portraits painted by my step mother in law.
After feeding us practically all summer, our beans will now feed us over the winter. (With some to save for planting next year.)

19 more pints of tomato sauce from our homegrown tomatoes. That's in addition to the 28 quarts we've already canned. (Some left over from last year).
This year we grew an heirloom variety called black krim that made the most delicious sauce I've ever tasted.
There is so much I can't control happening in the world right now. I find solace in the small things I can do. One of those things is to preserve the food we grow. It's an inherently hopeful act, believing in the future & caring for the future versions of ourselves & anyone who happens to stop by to be fed at our table.
This is the work of the past 2 days.
