So I tried to play Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. And I'm so sad...
I'm a huge Star Wars fan, I loved the first game and I've been wanting to play this one ever since it came out but I heard that it had performance issues. Big ones. I waited. Then I heard that they weren't fixed... but it was on sale so I got it anyway.
Here's the thing: The game plays super well, it looks awesome and sounds just as good. I really want to see what the story has in store for me, I've been waiting years since this game released! Never watched a playthrough! I kept waiting, hoping that they would fix it. Last year I built a new PC, and after eyeing for so long and being quite scared off by both the standard and the ProtonDB reviews, I decided to give it a shot.
What I heard wasn't lies. The game is a complete disaster on the technical front.
On my Intel ARC B580 paired with a AMD Ryzen™ 5 7500F and 16gb of RAM, the game was hovering in the 80 frames per seconds, with FSR on performance at 1440p, on the medium preset, which was perfectly fine, until eventually, a few friendly NPCs showed up, the game took a nose dive in the mid-40 frames, and then a cutscene started, at which point the game dropped in the 20s, gradually descended into the 10s, then the single digits until the game couldn't keep up anymore and completely froze.
Well shit. I knew where this was going already but I wanted to remain hopeful, have one thing work out for once. So I switched to Proton Experimental, that tends to fix a bunch of issues when you play on Linux...
I restarted the game, the cutscene played well. No issues! Yay! But then, progressively, performance got worse and worse, and when another cutscenes appeared, the performances tanked so badly that the game almost crashed again. I put the game on pause, as if I had to let it breathe for a second, pace itself and that somehow helped. The cutscene managed to finish in the dozens of frames per seconds. Then we got another cutscene, and the game immediately dropped below 20 fps, then reached a 5 and at this point, it was over.
It's quite clear that the game has a huge video memory leak issue and it makes the game actually unplayable... and it's also quite clear that this game will never be fixed on PC. The game is apparently fantastic too, which is heartbreaking. I'll never get to experience it for myself. I'm so sad...
