As Russian authority moved into the region, Russian federal laws including the 2013 ban on so called “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” effectively extended to Crimea. Ukrainian LGBTQ groups warned that the shift in control would dramatically worsen safety conditions for sexual and gender minorities. March 1 stands as a context date marking when geopolitical change translated into the expansion of restrictive anti LGBTQ legislation into a new territory.
