petition text:

The 44,000 square metre St. Marx open space is located on the site of the former slaughterhouse between Maria-Jacobi-Gasse and Karl-Farkas-Gasse in Vienna's third district.

For over ten years, it was home to a community garden, a DIY skate park, a basketball court and an art and culture association. The St. Marx district has undergone intensive development over the last 15 years, but without any consideration for balance. Only a few open spaces remain.

After the contracts with the local associations were terminated, an event arena is to be built on the site, financed with 215 million euros of taxpayers' money. The developer is said to be the German quasi-monopoly CTS Eventim, a listed ticket sales and event company based in Munich and administered in Bremen.

At the same time, support for socially vulnerable people is being cut under the pretext of budget consolidation. Infrastructure that is vital for many people is being undermined or destroyed. An event arena is not vital for anyone. The City of Vienna wants to afford this prestigious project, but not the secure livelihoods of its citizens.

We therefore call for a halt to the planning of the ‘Wien Holding Arena’ construction project and the rezoning of the St. Marx open space as public space.

A vibrant neighbourhood needs buffer zones and open spaces that are brought to life by people and nature. The privatisation of the open space would have drastic consequences for the local quality of life and the cultural diversity of the city.

Furthermore, the complete development of the site would make the city's climate targets a distant prospect.

THAT IS WHY WE CALL FOR:

  • Active citizen participation in the design of the St. Marx district. This means actively involving all local stakeholders and neighbours.

  • The City of Vienna should preserve, promote and create green spaces and recreational opportunities in the district.

  • The City of Vienna and Wien Holding GmbH should ensure the non-commercial use of the St. Marx open space by rezoning it.

We demand an affordable city – a city for everyone, where people can decide for themselves what their home should look like! Because the city belongs to everyone. No prestige projects while everyday life becomes unaffordable. We need meeting places that promote a local and small-scale culture, where we can meet free from consumerist pressures. Our goal is to preserve and shape these spaces!
