Important new report published today from the University of St Andrews: "The University of St Andrews and the Legacies of Empire, 1700-1900" - looks like a really thorough and well researched piece of vital work. The University of St Andrews and the Legacies of Empire, 1700-1900

This report is the result of a research project commissioned by the Principal of the University of St Andrews. We aimed to investigate the legacies that colonialism, empire, trade and slavery have left to the University of St Andrews, both as institution and as a community of students and staff. As well as monies received, we investigated the personal or family connections of members of the University community. We sought to explore how members of our (historical) community had contributed to debates about enslavement and race, or about colonialism and empire; and to discover how British colonialism shaped the culture and community of our University. We focused on the period 1700 to 1900. Contents: Introduction The university, the town and the local economy Where did the university's money come from? The academic community: professors, principals and chancellors Ideas and Inquiry Collections Students and Alumni The legacies of empire
