I took over the administration of the Karate Dojo's web presence. I received all the credentials and a while ago I checked the hosting, the websites (because there are two...?) and the domains. It is all very chaotic and was done by non-tech folks, which is fine. It just needs cleaning up (domains + hosting).
The website itself should be done from scratch.

Currently the dojo has two live websites.
A v1 which is from a jurassic age without responsive styles, and a v2 which is only halfway-done and stuck in a walled-garden called #Squarespace (which is charging more than 240€ per year lol). The v1 website is hosted by #1blu who is also charging insane hosting prices (about 180€ per year). These websites are static and I believe it should not cost this much.

I spent some time thinking and decided to go with Astro SSG for the new Karate Dojo website 🤔 hosting will be done through Forgejo Pages and at a later point in time I want to implement Decap CMS which will run through Forgejo Runners 🤔
The new website will also have a Nextcloud calendar and a Mastodon feed. 🤓
The idea is that money will only be spent for domains since hosting static websites, through Forgejo Pages, is free (as it should be in today's day and age!)
Killing off the old websites will be an annual saving of more than 400€

Let's see how it goes. Squarespace renewal is set for November, so that will be the deadline ✊🏽

It was genuinely fun to help build a website like this as it is so different to most of my usual day-to-day website work.

Effectively, once I had the assets from her the first draft of the site (built with #Squarespace) took only two hours.

I then fiddled and tweaked for many more hours after that. Frustratingly, Squarespace won’t let you add custom code or CSS on the entry level plan but you can when you are building the unpublished site for free.

This meant that one of my changes became undone when the site went live and I had to find a workaround as I didn’t think it was worth a £60 pa upgrade for this.

Just trying to get my domain moved after being forced to SquareSpace from Google Domains, and...wow I didn't realize SquareSpace was this terrible:
- Still no transfer auth code after over 2 hours (they say it can take up to 24...for reasons?) Typical is ~5m
- Opening a support case with the chatbot gives you *no* feedback (even a case id) and no way to check on the status of it--nor an email confirmation
- After the bot opens a case, I can't continue chatting with it
