So, I read all of the classic 80s sports manga, Captain Tsubasa recently.

Some thoughts.

The notes on the Viz translation explaining West and East Germany for modern readers who don't know about it was a trip.

I'm still shocked over the idea of a 15 year old just leaving home to move to a new country without their parents to try to become a professional athlete and skipping high school. But, I guess that was the 80s.

It was such a fast paced manga, such an easy read.

Also, I've watched and played soccer - there's way more downtime in this manga where people have whole conversations than in real life.

It was a lot of fun, very melodramatic.

Glad I read it.

Me: I should not add any new manga to my reading list
Also Me: Oh, Captain Tsubasa just dropped in full on Viz's Shonen Jump app. I am reading this!

Read the first chapter of Embers. The manga is about a delinquent teenage boy who after being stopped fighting by a teacher, is slowly taught how to play soccer.

Giving Haikyuu vibes, he creates a team around himself (similar to Hinata at the start of Haikyuu) even though he's really the only one interested.

The chapter ends with him entering high school going to what appears to be a powerhouse soccer school. I have a feeling he'll meet the players he played against in middle school from Chapter 1 when he gets there.

Short story - I'm sold on the premise. Quick and easy to follow. Interesting sports action. I'm also interested in the character. So, let's go.

Martial Master Asumi - Wait a second! Does Nito...actually like doing MMA?

Maybe.

Do Retry - Our hero is trying to learn stronger techniques, finds a study guide, gets stopped by some dude who apparently knew his father...and they're going to fight soon!

Oh and the study guide was made by the main character's Dad when he was a boxer.
WHAAT!

Do Retry - Solid chapter. Our hero gets his card to be allowed to participate while giving us a well done boxing match. His tenacity is unrivaled and willingness to just get...pummeled until he psyches out his opponent.

But, we also get a clear reminder that this is underground, organized crime. And dangerous.

Definitely keeping me engaged.
