I was in New Paltz, NY, last weekend and almost every tree trunk was studded with spongy moth (Lymantria dispar) egg masses. Didn't take me long to find Ooencyrtus kuvanae (Encyrtidae), one of the introduced wasps that parasitizes them. It also goes after spotted lanternfly eggs. #wasp #hymenoptera #ipm #lepidoptera #moth #nature #biology #SpongyMoth #entomology

Good news! I don’t have any aspen or willow trees, which are favorite foods of spongy moths.

Bad news! I have oak, birch, crabapple, tamarack, and linden trees. These are also favorite foods of spongy moths.

I saw a lot of Lymantria dispar, spongy moth, in Saratoga County at the start of my Adirondacks trip. Yet even as I am aware of their destructiveness in my part of the world, I cannot help but admire their beauty.

RT @USDA_APHIS: Don’t be fooled by its appearance! The spongy moth is a significant invasive species because the caterpillars have voracious appetites that pose a great danger to North America's forests. πŸ›
