This went quite quickly. I guess I'm finally learning to embrace the texture. The short stapled roving works better for supported spindles than for my cross arm spindles. Now on with two wheel spun singles and then ply the three together.

Almost half way with the next spindle spun single of this colour experiment. It's interesting that the red now looks red whereas in the precious yarn it looks raspberry pink. It's the same fiber. I blended each colour 45/45 with it's neighbour in the photo below and then added 10% white alpaca.

For #WIPWednesday I have an improvised setup that allows me to carefully wind a single from a supported spindle onto a bobbin of my small wheel using the big wheel. I can rotate the large drive wheel with my left hand while holding the spindle in my right hand. And by now I have a second single made with the wheel. It's so much faster than my clumsy spindle spinning.

The first single of the dark blue/turquoise is done. I'll do the other two on a wheel using long draw technique. That will significantly increase the odds of making a useable yarn. Also I can now pick another colour to start the next supported spindle spin.

For this week's #WIPWednesday I have spindle spinning experiments. I decided that my supported spindles are too fragile to take on a bicycle tour. So I started a new spin on a trusty cross spindle and took it on an overnight trip. I did try a different technique than my usual inspired by a demonstration of medieval spinning by Pallia.

Back home I started experimenting with a hand held distaff and did some more supported spinning.

The last two blends made. I have three large fauxlags in each colour. So that will take me through summer on hand spindles and leave some for the wheel too.

I've got to embrace the texture and revive my support spindling skills. Feel like a total beginner.

People who spindle spin: I am going to be running a spindle workshop and want to know what you would recommend for beginners in the way of fibre. I'm thinking dyed merino (assuming it's not felty), but does anyone have a better suggestion for beginners? #fiberarts #SpindleSpinning #Textileart
Preparing some quite felty fibre for spindle spinning, I've got quite a lot of this (actual quantity unknown) and want to finish it now so I can ply and knit it! Intending to do a chain ply 3ply. #SpindleSpinning #FiberArts
