Ancient Rome had their own version of “ketchup”; it wasn’t tomatoes… it was fermented fish.
Garum was poured on everything, traded like gold, and then it vanished. Did it? Its flavor still lives on in unexpected places today.

There's a widespread myth that medieval people used spices to cover up the taste of rotten meat.

The whole story traces back to one book. In 1939, a scientist named J.C. Drummond published The Englishman's Food and suggested that medieval recipes were so heavily spiced because the meat was frequently tainted. No evidence. Just an assumption. One sentence in one book published 85 years ago.

Got some minced beef on sale so decided to experiment with flavors by combining gochujang, honey garlic sauce and some soya for the beef. Along with some ginger, various frozen veggies for more filling and fresh broccoli.
Pairing with rice this time.

Even broke out my wok again to stir fry in. Tastes very nice, but could use a bit more sweetness/honey. Tingles in the lips so spiciness is spot on.

Kid1 helping make a new batch of garam masala. She picked out and measured out all the spices. Glad she's getting a quick exercise in figuring out a) what each of the spices look like and b) where they are kept
And she wants to hand grind it all! (We'll see)
This batch has long pepper and dried mushrooms extra
