Started working on a new mezzotint, my largest to date.

The roughening process took ages :D I started many months ago, not knowing at first what I would engrave on it, just doing one or two passes occasionally (I do 36 in total). But once I decided of a subject, I finished it in a few days.

So, it will be sleeping sperm whales. I think most of the result will depend on whether I succeed in rendering a uniform enough background, with light rays plunging from the top to the ocean depths. We'll see!

The beached #spermWhale that was examined in #Greenwich (London) in 2013 felt out of place by the Thames. But for good reason! This remarkably life-like #sculpture is an #art installation by a Belgian art collective, created to raise awareness of the decline of #whales and the impact of climate change. The #whale has already toured several European cities.

UC #Berkeley #scientists hail breakthrough in decoding #whale #communication
According to a new study from Begus and his colleagues with Project #CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), the whales make sounds that resemble vowels, a key part of human language.
Although scientists already knew that #spermwhales communicate with codas — sequences of clicks analogous to #MorseCode — the study indicates a more complex communication system.

Второй раз поплавал с кашалотами. Последний заход был самым лучшим - я был в окружении четырех особей, они были совсем рядом и плыли небыстро. Но, конечно, именно в этот раз я не включил камеру 😪😪😪.

How #Scientists Are Using #Drones to Study #SpermWhales
A new tagging method called tap-and-go allows researchers to gather more data on the health and behavior of #whales, with less disruption.
Instead of dropping a tag from above, this #drone will press against the whale’s back to attach a specialized sensor. The tag’s suction cups will stick to the #whale’s skin, allowing the device to record audio of these #marinemammals communicating.

Now, research suggests that sperm whales’ communication is actually much more expressive and complicated than was previously thought.

Awakening #Patagonia's sleeping #SpermWhale: a new description of the Early #Miocene Idiorophus patagonicus. By Florencia Paolucci et al. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/spp2.70007

"Its snout features point to a lifestyle quite different from modern sperm #whales. It was likely an active predator of large #fish and possibly #seabirds, while extant #SpermWhales feed mostly on #cephalopods or small fish through suction feeding"

Ancient Patagonian fossil sperm whale may have been active predator, reanalysis indicates

A recent study, published in Papers in Palaeontology, discusses the reanalysis of the only known Idiorophus patagonicus specimen.

Sperm whales have two nostrils, but unlike most animals, they are asymmetrically positioned. The left nostril is visible on the outside and forms the single blowhole used for breathing. The right nostril is hidden inside the whale’s massive head and is actually part of its complex echolocation system.

Sperm whales cuddle. These deeply social animals frequently swim close together, rubbing their bodies against one another. This tactile behavior is a form of bonding and likely provides comfort, much like a cuddle would for humans.
