Príncipe de Asturias (R-11) was the first aircraft carrier designed and built in Spain. Conceived to operate Harrier V/STOL aircraft, it was based on the Sea Control Ship concept developed by the US Navy in the seventies and canceled soon afterward. Documentation generated by the Gibb & Cox design bureau was acquired by Empresa Nacional Bazán, which completed and enhanced the design, adding state-of-the-art concepts like the ski jump.
