It’s like a universal self-defence mechanism: If a species is too dumb to treat space with care, it will end up being surface-locked for a couple thousand years until it either improves or dies out.
It might be for the best actually: I’m really afraid that capitalism might end up escaping sanity for another several hundred years by billionaires expanding to space. Being confronted with “yes, this is really it” on earth is honestly exactly what we as humanity need to transition to a new system.
Perhaps Kessler syndrome is an unfortunate but necessary phase for that.
(Also Kessler syndrome is so well named: Kessel in German is pot/cauldron and that’s exactly what earth is going to feel like – like being trapped inside a cauldron.)
