An islander’s life in the Southern Gulf Island is organized around ferry schedules for coming and going. The evening is warm at near the end of a heat wave and we welcome the cool breeze off of the sea as the Queen of Cumberland leaves Pender Island to take us home to Mayne Island. A quiet settles in next to the rumble of the boat engine. We should be home and in the door about 9:45 pm. Tomorrow will be another day.

Another four of my paintings have recently sold to art collectors. This year has been going fairly well so far. I have completed and released 19 paintings and sold 18 from my inventory. This success is partly due to my milestone birthday surprise special but not entirely. Still, I am humbly grateful regardless of the reason.

A Brush With Life - Issue #127 My Special Birthday Surprise For You

This is my way of saying thank you in a meaningful way for your ongoing support and patronage as I entertain my semi retirement from being a full-time artist. No worries, there are still going to be more new “Terrill Welch paintings” in your future!

Last evening after the summer rain one of my favourite trees outside my window is very happy. It had been a very long time since it rained here on the southwest coast of Canada.

It is our sixth year of summer drought but there was enough rain yesterday for rain barrels to be filled and give the trees and plants a good drink.

From spring to fall, I can be found around our small southwest coast of Canada island with an easel set up to plein air paint. These small or larger loosely painted surfaces become works in their own right but are also used for other studio works later on.

As a landscape painter, there is a lot of pleasure in spending 30 - 60 minutes at a time brushing in the world around me. I leave with fresh excitement and ideas that carry me through the rest of the day and week.

In the last five weeks, nine of my paintings have found homes. There are still 135 available out of about 600 paintings I have created in the past twelve years. I had to think long and hard about the best way to share this news here on Mastodon with alt text. But I think I got it!

It is kind of a big deal finding homes for paintings and certainly several over a short amount of time is newsworthy, yes? However, I am having a milestone birthday and this is how I am celebrating!

Today’s work done!…. in light that changed a thousand times…

“Trees and Shore at Oyster Bay” by Terrill Welch, 8 x 10 inch acrylic on gessobord plein air.

Artist Notes: It is midday at the end of June. There is a breeze in Oyster Bay on Mayne Island and quickly changing filtered light that make for ideal plein air painting conditions. I take it! Knowing where the sun will be in an hour and that the tide is on its way in helps to brush this fresh view lightly into place.

A recent release of an invigorating seascape painting for you today…

"A Bright Blustery Day at Reef Bay" by Terrill Welch, walnut oil on birch board, 11 x 14 inches.

Artist notes: The wind had picked up but the light was extra bright and clear. I gathered reference and took them back to the studio to capture the mood of the day - light and invigorating!

Today’s work in the open air at Georgina Point on Mayne Island in British Columbia, Canada.

“Arbutus at Georgina Point” by Terrill Welch
10 x 8 inch acrylic on gessobord plein air

Artist notes: The early May sun shown as if it was the middle of June. What could a painter do but stand beside the sea with her brushes moving freely and rhythmically across the surface.
