I am doing a research series about the South Seas and Pacific Islands. I want to compare and contrast social and economic pre- and post- WWII. I'm starting with Honolulu. Eventually I will make a video series, but still thinking on the format. I'm doing this because I want to learn more about the history and I want to share that with you.

The South Sea Company was a British joint-stock company founded in January 1711. Initially, the company’s stock rose in value as it expanded its operations dealing in government debt. Then, in 1720, the company collapsed.

In 1913-14 #EmilNolde spent some time in the #southseas & while he was there made some interesting watercolour sketches of locals both as stand-alone portraits or scenes of activity... these seem (to me at least) an interestingly humanistic response to late #imperialism, depicting the subjects (of the #portraits) humanely & without the taint of #orientalism... here are four of the portrait sketches from the trip for you to judge yourself.
