Which #democratic system of #elections and #voting would you prefer to live in?
system ①
* voting is optional
* voter turnout: ~66.1%
* 2 rounds of voting (primaries + final)
* only citizens can vote
* voting is erroneously thought to be a right, but:
- voters are often disenfranchised
- there is voter suppression & intimidation (policies & tactics
by right wing conservatives to discourage voting)
- some right-wing regions have strict rules that are fussy about what kind of ID proof voters must show, as a tactic to make voting difficult for those who struggle with paperwork (which is primarily left-voting demographics); implemented under the guise of fraud control dispite lack of significant fraud
- voting is never possible on Sunday to discourage #soulsToThePolls (buses that pick up black church goers after church to increase voter turnout, which is mostly liberal voters)
* ~10+% of the country shares your detailed voter info (like tax ID# & DL#) with a tech giant (Cloudflare).
* most of the country makes public to /everyone/ your:
- name
- residential address
- political party affiliation (disclosure required if you vote in primaries)
- whether or not you voted in the last election
* every region has different voting equipment; often embarrassing problems emerge which bias one party or candidate. Up to 50 chances of a snafu occuring in every election (1 per state)
* 2-party system for white males. For much of the rest of the population it’s effectively closer to a 1-party system
* After results are in, winners are simply sworn in and take office on a designated date to start working. But the losing party might be sore losers and consume time, money, and energy on conspiracy theories about “rigged” elections.
system ②
* voting is obligatory
* voter turnout: ~87.5%
* 1 round of voting
* citizens can vote for all levels of gov while non-citizen residents can vote in local elections
* voter suppression non-existent (because it’s mandatory)
* fined €80 for not voting (rare, assume <10% chance)
* voting is on Sunday only, when most people do not need to work
* your name & address is shared with all politiical parties, who then put their flyers in your mailbox or come to your door to pitch their candidates
* your personal info is not published, & after the election the political parties must delete their records of it
* if you neglect to vote in 3 elections in a row, you lose your voting rights in the 4th election
* consistent voting tech nationwide; if there is a software defect, it’s nationwide
* ~30+ party system
* After results are in, as long as 500 days might be spent in negotiations between the winning parties who try to form coalitions before anyone is sworn into power.
For reference, hypothetical system ① is inspired by the #USA, and hypothetical system ② is inspired by #Belgium
