Democracy, Sortition.... And You

freedom does not promise safety but agency

the reason you really want freedom is that people are much smarter in groups, despite that quote. the real advances come from a mostly cooperating human civilization at increasing scales.

a system that favors taking away agency from the masses risks rolling the die badly and getting a loser in charge.

tl;dr even #sortition is strictly better than #fascism

@ChrisMayLA6 @NWBylines Gimme elected politicians over oligarchy any day! We already have far too much power in professions such as law and medicine, and entrenching that oligarchy ndermines your core principle of #sortition.

But I love the idea of wider investigatory and scrutiny powers for an upper house able to hire significant significant outside expertise. That idea has huge potential, taking the concept of a House of Review or House of Scrutiny to a new level.

Good Idea: Embracing Sortition

https://thewalrus.ca/why-we-should-let-a-lottery-decide-our-government/

This article explores the concept of sortition, a system where political representatives are chosen randomly rather than through elections, as practiced in ancient Athens. Advocates argue that sortition could create a more representative and inclusive democracy by reflecting the demographics and concerns of ordinary citizens, unlike current systems dominated by wealthier, older, and less diverse politicians. Examples like British Columbia's citizens' assembly demonstrate that everyday people can effectively engage in political decision making, suggesting that sortition could reduce the influence of money and vested interests while improving political discourse.

Why We Should Let a Lottery Decide Our Government | The Walrus

Politicians are often older, wealthy, and white. Could randomly selecting average citizens lead to better representation?

My only reservation at this time, why do we need an "elected" parliament. I'm all for assemblies through #sortition

Sortition Can Help Cure What Ails Our Democracy

Americans are frustrated with our increasingly oligarchic political system. Selecting an assortment of lawmaking deliberative bodies through random lotteries could help fix it, by empowering ordinary people rather than unaccountable politicians.
