Lampedusa 2023: Between Solidarity and Europe's Failure

In the past week, one year ago, over 5,000 people arrived in Lampedusa on a single day, having left Tunisia in unseaworthy boats. While the local detention centre collapsed under pressure, the true spirit of solidarity emerged as Lampedusa’s residents opened their homes, providing food and shelter.

But this act of humanity should never have been necessary. The island and its residents have been abandoned for years by Italy and the rest of Europe. Instead of addressing migration, people on the move continue to be exploited for racist and inhumane propaganda.

We need an EU-wide migration policy that works with migration, not against it, building a society where everyone can live together in peace, not divided by fear.
