While on the subject of #LateStageCapitalism... Unfortunately, this doesn't surprise me. If #Glyphosate can cause gut inflammation [and bugs' stomachs to explode], you can count on it causing brain inflammation! Oh, and yeah -- deport those migrant farm workers and start doing their jobs, MAGAts. Good luck with that!

Chemical found in breakfast foods [and lots of other foods] linked to #BrainDamage in new study

December 5, 2024
Story by Maiya Focht Health Reporter

"A #pesticide that has been found in breakfast cereals, oats and orange juice may be able to cause dementia symptoms in weeks.

"Weed-killer glyphosate, which is the active ingredient in RoundUp, has long been linked to cancers and nerve damage. But much of the earlier research has focused on looking at people that interact with it every day like farm workers.

"The new study, performed on mice, suggests even small amounts of exposure can have long-lasting effects.

"Experts found rodents who were given for about three months saw Alzheimer's-like changes to their brains which persisted for months.

"Upon dissecting the brains, the researchers saw the chemical itself had gotten into the delicate tissue of the brain, where it likely caused inflammation, which caused nerves and brain tissue to decay, leading to the changes they observed after six months.

"Patrick Pirrotte, a study author and director at City of Hope said: 'These findings highlight that many chemicals we regularly encounter, previously considered safe, may pose potential health risks.

"Foods that were found to contain glyphosate include #QuakerOatmeal, #CheezIt and #Tropicana orange juice, according to a separate analysis by Sokolove law, a personal injury and illness law firm."

Global assessment of soil pollution: Report

Soil pollution is invisible to the human eye, but it compromises the quality of the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe and puts human and environmental health at risk. Most contaminants originate from human activities such as industrial processes and mining, poor waste management, unsustainable farming practices, accidents ranging from small chemical spills to accidents at nuclear power plants, and the many effects of armed conflicts. Pollution knows no borders: contaminants are spread throughout terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and many are distributed globally by atmospheric transport. In addition, they are redistributed through the global economy by way of food and production chains. Soil pollution has been internationally recognized as a major threat to soil health, and it affects the soil’s ability to provide ecosystem services, including the production of safe and sufficient food, compromising global food security. Soil pollution hinders the achievement of many of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including those related to poverty elimination (SDG 1), zero hunger (SDG 2), and good health and well-being (SDG 3). Soil pollution hits the most vulnerable hardest, especially children and women (SDG 5). The supply of safe drinking water is threatened by the leaching of contaminants into groundwater and runoff (SDG 6). CO2 and N2O emissions from unsustainably managed soils accelerate climate change (SDG 13). Soil pollution contributes to land degradation and loss of terrestrial (SDG 15) and aquatic (SDG 14) biodiversity, and decreased the security and resilience of cities (SDG 11), among others.

The Drinking Water Crisis That North Carolina Ignored

For decades, #DuPont dumped toxic PFAS into North Carolina’s #CapeFearRiver. Today, the local community is suffering the health consequences—and fighting back.

June 7, 2021

[...]

"The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (#NCDEQ) filed a lawsuit against #Chemours in 2017—but only in response to bad press—and last fall, the state attorney general filed another. And yet, North Carolina is currently reviewing its water quality standards, something it does every three years, but not one rule for PFAS pollution is even up for consideration. 'People know they’re being poisoned, but the state isn’t doing much about it,' Bell says.

"So residents have been taking matters into their own hands. In July 2018, #CapeFearRiverWatch, represented by the Southern Environmental Law Center (#SELC), sued the #NCDEQ to force Chemours to immediately stop polluting the Cape Fear River. The following month, the pair also filed a federal lawsuit against Chemours for violating the #CleanWaterAct and #ToxicSubstancesControlAct, but it was dropped later in the year as part of a $13 million #settlement among the NCDEQ, Cape Fear River Watch, and Chemours. The settlement resulted in a consent order that required Chemours to cease its discharges and add #scrubbers to its smokestacks to prevent airborne PFAS pollution. The outcome is a critical step in preventing future PFAS pollution, but NCDEQ has had to fine the company for not complying with the order, and its past contamination, still lingering in the #water, #soil, and peoples’ bodies, remains unaddressed."
