Reading about the license cost increase of h264 (video codec) shows that open and royalty-free standards and codecs are important to be independent and inclusive.

In the very few cases, two or something, where I converted videos I also used h264, despite preferring something open like the modern AV1, just because I know basically all devices, like my laptop, support hardware-decoding of h264, while software-decoding of AV1 (no clue if my laptop can hardware-decode VP8/9) needs more power.

I should change that in the future, out of principle, as much as I value better old-device support.

That said: AV1 also has some companies claiming patents, so far without success. Bite patent trolls and software patents!

Software patents should have never been allowed to become a legit thing.

Big Tech declaring AV1 royalty-free “doesn't mean that it is," critic says.

Broadcom are just useless patent trolls at this point.

If you can't get a Renault Megane or Clio in Germany at the moment you can thank them for it somehow, because of their "Method and system for an extended range ethernet line code" software patent (EP1903733).

Software parents should be banned tbh

@dalias Say you want the public to benefit from a video codec that's usable by free software in countries where MPEG-LA members hold patents. Would there have been a better way to go about this than how Google released WebM using On2's TrueMotion VP8?

PERA Remains A Serious Threat To Efforts Against Bad Patents

As all things old are new again, a bill that would make obtaining bad patents easier and harder to challenge is being considered in the Senate Judiciary Committee. The Patent Eligibility …

I too am shocked and offended.

"In my opinion, none of the three patents I've discussed here should have been allowed. It's shocking and offensive that they were," Sigmon said. "The USPTO dropped the ball big time, and it's going to externalize a lot of uncertainty (and, potentially, litigation cost) onto developers and companies that do not deserve it."

'An embarrassing failure of the US patent system': Videogame IP lawyer says Nintendo's latest patents on Pokémon mechanics 'should not have happened, full stop'

"Bad patents like this cast a massive shadow on the industry."

Digging through my #Steam library and found a game that I apparently last played in 2014: Symphony (Empty Clip Studios). Basically, an arcade shooter that loads up music from your own music library and lets you shoot some vector things, to the beat.

Problem is, most of the music I have downloaded on this computer is via iTunes, in AAC format. Back in the day I bought the AAC add-on for Symphony, but the problem is, Symphony asks me to install QuickTime. #Apple has deprecated #QuickTime for Windows, so I'm not *too* keen on trying to install it. Also the game says "hey we're not allowed to distribute the decoder" - shit, I paid money for the add-on, what did I pay you guys for back in the day? Apple *sucks*, man.

Guess I'll convert shit to sensible formats after all if I want to play this. Hell, these days I can even use MP3s without feeling bad! Remember: Hella proprietary formats *continue* to screw you over, if not today, then one day in the future.

Virtually the same text - a detailed spec/design document that describes a problem and its technical solution in software - if typed into Word and sent to a patent lawyer, will turn into a patent, if typed into a modern LLM (those reasoning ones using chain-of-thought-reasoning), will turn into software that cannot even be copyrighted.

Yepp the legal system is consistent and reasonable. And not at all a decade behind technology.
