This here is Freeway Orange from Lidl.
"Hold the fuck up!" you say, "you're showing us the cheapest soda from a cheapo chain store?!"
That's right.
Now let's see:
✅ Has actual juice for flavor in it
✅ Has actual sugar, no BS half-and-half sweetener things like in many big brand sodas (Pepsi, WTF?!)
✅ Tastes actually okay
You'd expect all that from a soda that costs like 2€ or more a can, but these days it seems to be too much to ask for. This bad boy comes in my mouth for 0.52€ a pop. Nothing else comes that cheaply, I can assure you.
So when I buy cheap soda to fill the arcade's staff fridge, it's sure as hell one of the many variants of this Lidl soda.
This is Guaraná Antarctica from Brazil and as the name would suggest, it has guarana in it. It's relatively sweet and the taste of guarana is relatively mild, this reminds me more of 7up.
Somewhere in the late 90s local soda brand Frisco had guarana in their lineup as well, but that tasted rank. I however quickly learned it had very high caffeine content and downing a 1.5l bottle gave a nice sugar+caffeine high. Those were soon pulled as the actual energy drinks surfaced and they realised they could put a huge markup on the stuff.
But yeah, this was surprisingly okay for guarana, although not really anything to write home about. But apparently enough to rant on the Fediverse. 🤷
