How do you engage with non-fediverse people on the web?

Before joining Mastodon last year, it was easy to communicate with people I discovered on the web (mostly via Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook). While I don't post content on these #walledgarden sites anymore, I maintain accounts primarily to keep in touch with those that do.

Now, I almost feel obligated to ask non-fedi people if they've tried Mastodon (or Pixelfed, etc), but sometimes it seems pointless, like I'm a weird evangelist pushing for yet another random form of social media.

I guess my question is kind of rhetorical, but I'm curious if others feel the same. For someone who only discovered the #fediverse last year, I've found it to be a game-changer, but it's such a paradigm-shift that most people don't get it.
