Europeans understand "liberalism" better than do Americans. It's the one word in American English whose misuse vexes me more than any other political lexeme. Like the Europeans, I view the "liber" part as meaning "free to work and live one's life without government interference, except to defend those freedoms". All the public-good "liberals" would do well to start calling themselves what they are: progressives.

American #SocialLiberalism is a failed ideology, despite the fact that it has resulted in some good outcomes. We must recongize this.

It was an attempt to graft #socialism #authoritarianism into symbiosis with #liberalism #capitalism, and it just doesn't work when you artificially force these two antithetical ideologies together.

So-called #ThirdWay politics, which is incorrectly called #neoliberalism by some commentators, has proven to be even more of a dismal failure.

To be clear, there is a strong thread of authoritarianism also woven into the fabric of the #DemocraticParty. This is the cancer at the heart of #SocialLiberalism in America.

This is why the #DemocraticParty is such an ineffective opposition. This is how we got #Biden, #Harris, #Pelosi, #Feinstein, #Lieberman, #Lautenberg, and #Schumer, among many other #Democrats who have carried and still carry the torch for the military/security/police/prison-industrial complex, while claiming to be "left".
