SocialBC folks: how are peoples’ experiences with the local news bots? Any feedback?

#SocialBC

#socialBC is back online. A victim of our success... growing disk space usage :)

Heads up for #SocialBC users.
We’ve been having some issues since yesterday afternoon where timelines are updating a visible but posting and interactions are not working or intermittent.

We're on the case and working on a fix.

Thanks for your patience.

@jsewell welcome to BC and #SocialBC Jeffrey!!

As promised, I have implemented the suspension/block on mastodon.cloud. Folks on #SocialBC will not be able to interact with accounts on that server.

This was done due to ongoing issues with spam and un-moderated user additions from that un-regulated and defunct server.

The negative impact should be minimal as very few people followed accounts there or vice versa.

Since I went nuclear on the Black Press owned outlets I’m definitely noticing a lack of local news for the smaller communities. Is anyone else feeling the absence of news from their particular town/region?

Hey #SocialBC folks!
I've posted an announcement on the webpage. You can find it under the speaker icon. The short version is:

As of May 1, 2026 SocialBC.ca will be de-federating from the Mastodon.cloud instance.

The instance has become defunct and still has open registation so is becoming a source of spam and other problematic content.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to the team.

Found a little glitch with the #RosslandBC news feed this morning. I’ve narrowed the search scope a little bit to hopefully tighten it up. #SocialBC

@chris
Happy to do it, I’m also a customer! 🙂

Fun fact: my social media browse now often includes a peek in on the #SocialBC local feed to see what’s going on around the province.

News bot update: with *most* of the Black Press outlets filtered out, the feed (at least from my perspective) seems much more relevant and manageable.

I discovered that the site (rss.app) I use to create the feeds has an upper limit on the number of filter terms I can use, and I’ve reached it, so adding any more keywords means removing others.

One day I’d like to move to a programatic solution, but I’m not much of a coder, so a bunch more learning would be required…
