Love Potion Soap

by Raven's Dream Maine

- 201 grams NaOH (Food-grade lye)
- 1lb 3oz distilled water
- 1lb 5 oz olive oil
- 1lb coconut oil
- 14 oz palm oil
- 10 teaspoons (2 oz) Love Potion blend essential oil.

Heat fats and lye close to desired temperature (100 degrees F).

Whisk quickly and firmly with a stainless-steel whisk. Once it is well blended, immediately begin pouring the lye mixture to the melted fats and oils.

NOTE - An immersion stick blender is crucial while blending the mixture! Otherwise, the soap won't last as long! (That goes for any cold processed soap.)

Pour into molds. I would recommend using a 5 lb wooden mold, or two 3-lb ones, and not fancy molds.

Put the soap to sleep (wrap in towels), and unmold it a few days later. (We use a closet with shelves to store soap in).

Use appropriate precautions while handling lye / lyewater, and wear protective gear (goggles, chemical resistant gloves). Lye and or raw soap can cause chemcial burns!

More precautions and tips can be found in the #SoapMakersCompanion book by Susan Cavitch Miller.

@UlrikeHeiss So yeah, superfatting (which is what we do in our recipes) involves using 10% more fats than most soap recipes. Again, I would emphasize that folks consult The Soapmaker's Companion for SAP values, and make oil substitutions accordingly. We've been making soap with variations of the superfatted recipe for over 30 years, and have never had a problem (except when using castor oil, or EOs that interfere with saponification).

“Queen of Heaven” - Gluten-free Oats & Honey Soap

by Raven's Dream Maine

- 198 grams NaOH (Food-grade lye)
- 12.8 oz (362.9 g) distilled water
- 1lb olive oi
- 3.5 oz (99.2g) Almond, Avocado & Kukui nut oils (0.7 oz Almond, 1.5 oz Avocado, 1.3 oz Kukui) -- Almond and Avocado can be used without the Kukui -- just split the amount in half -- 1.75 oz of each)
- 1 lb coconut oil
- 14 oz palm oil
- 1.5 oz beeswax (melted)
- 1/2 cup gluten-free oats (one can grind the oats or leave them whole, depending on what texture one desires with the soap)
- 6.4 ounces buttermilk (heated)
- 10 teaspoons honey

Once fats and lye are close to desired temperature, gently heat buttermilk to same temperature (100 degrees F).

Whisk quickly and firmly with a stainless-steel whisk, add buttermilk to lye solution. Once it is well blended, immediately begin pouring the lye/milk mixture to the melted fats and oils.

NOTE - A bar mixer is crucial while blending the mixture! Otherwise, the soap won't last as long! (That goes for any cold processed soap.)

At trace, incorporate honey and oatmeal, blending quickly to avoid overly thickened soap.

I would recommend using a 5 lb wooden mold, or two 3-lb ones, and not fancy molds.

This #SoapRecipe calls for using an immersion blender (aka, bar mixer). We switched to using one of those for our #soapmaking, and it makes a huge difference!

How to Make Tallow Soap

Today I'm sharing how to make tallow soap. Grass fed tallow has amazing skin benefits, and it makes a beautiful soap. Soap making is really fun.

This year, we're going to make some #ColdProcess soap with #BeefTallow instead of #PalmOil (they are nearly identical in SAP value, an important component in soapmaking), and contribute to a soap's hardness.

The recipe below is for #HotProcess soap, but is very similar to the recipe we use for Cold-Process soap (pretty much substitute Tallow for Palm Oil).
