Coronation Street's Gareth Pierce has very different accent away from ITV soap
I disagree, for the reason alluded to elsethread by @BadExampleMan.
There's an awful lot of very popular fiction, in the form of major telly soap operas and family dramas, where the misunderstandings are rife and the miscommunications are frustratingly unrealistic. Yet there's very little discontent in soap opera viewerships at how unrealistic they are and how their plots wouldn't happen in real life with even a moderately sensible person.
I suspect that things not happening in real life, and being to a great extent a series of interwoven morality tales pointing out how *not* to react to situations, is part of the draw of soap operas.
The soap opera versions of life in the East End of London, or in a small close in Liverpool, or on a street in Manchester, or even in a rural village between Worcestershire and Warwickshire, are pretty unconvincing and yet people clearly remain immersed and engaged.
