A full day of #boardgames and camaraderie yesterday at @geekyteas in Burbank for the #SoCalWargamers
We had brought along a bunch of historical games for the expected headcount of 3. Three being a tough number in a lot of games. This being the Memorial Day weekend meant our numbers were light. But hey, compared to the local game con, we had parking, pleasant surroundings, and good grub available.

23rd times lucky I guess. After so many plays I finally win at the hybrid #eurogame / #wargame #boardgame Wings For The Baron. Design and market aircraft in WW1 Germany. The winner has the highest amount of gold and paper money. Inflation will erode the worth of paper money as the game progresses.

The main game for the #socalwargamers gathering at Geeky Teas in Burbank was the classic CDG Napoleonic Wars. The less said about that the better as Nappy landed and conquered Britain in turn 1. 😜

Some pics of #boardgames at ConQuest Ventura yesterday. CQV is a 3 day #tabletopgaming com in Ventura, CA. Gamers came from far and wide. Greg was visiting from Texas. Some of my #SoCalWargamers pals came up from LA and further. Members of my local #VCSB group also attended. It was good to see a bunch of folks I don’t see very often.

#SoCalWargamers at Geeky Teas in Burbank yesterday.
The main #boardgame was Purple Haze. It’s a mission driven sort-of RPG. No spoilers but the gang had fun despite the highs, lows, & tactical muck ups.
#BoardWargames for 7 is tough. Karl had brought along Alliance. It has the standard Columbia Games block mechanics dumped on the Napoleonic Wars. It’s good that it has scenarios & flexible player count but I found it very meh.
Last game was Five Tribes. A fun but soulless euro.

Land and Freedom (by Blue Panther Games) is where the three players each play a faction within the Spanish Republication administration. Only one is the current government that gets the glory. It is a matter of when one of the factions decides to ignore the military and grab control of the government, rather than if. It will happen... often. In this game my Moderates held the government the most but we lost the game mid in the final turn. I blame the others!

Yesterday at Odyssey Games Pasadena was three of us among a sea of minis games, card gamers, and a big group of board gamers later. So we were very civil with two 3-player games on civil-wars.

First was Brotherhood and Unity on early-1990s Bosnia and Herzegovina. That was followed by the semi-uncooperative Land and Freedom on the Spanish Civil War.

Combat Commander Pacific #boardgame Battle Pack 9 Island Hopping is up for p500 pre-order at #GMTGames
Congrats to local #SoCalWargamers designer Mark and all the folks who have worked on the long awaited battle pack. The scenarios range from Wake Island, Attu, Saipan etc. Yoshi has been developing and testing the scenarios for ten-ish years. These pics of playtesting with John E and John L are from Orccon 2014 aka #strategicon

Downfall Conquest of the 3R 1942-45 #boardgame by #GMTGames with Karl and Bob yesterday. I taught the game, advised, cajoled, and critiqued while they played.

Downfall is a 2-player strategic level #wargame on ww2 where 1 player controls the Soviets & western Axis while the other control the UK/US & eastern Axis forces aka the classic SPI Battle for Germany. So each gets to attack and defend…

Saturday #boardgames at Gameology Pasadena with the #SoCalWargamers
With John visiting we had enough for the planned game of Border Reivers while Steve and I did a 2-player #boardgame
Prelude to Revolution by #compassgames is a CDG on the politics of Russia from 1905 to 1917. Steve played the Government while I was the Revolutionaries. This was my 4th play and it is further clear that this game is biased towards the Government. So much so the developer has now created a balancing variant.

The follow up was the 3-player semi co-op on the Spanish Civil War. Terry took the un cooperative nature to heart and it almost paid off for him. After losing the North we lost the South front on the very last event card of the game. Poor Anarchist player Karl never held the government long enough to get any additional chits in the bag of glory. Fun game though. No Pasaran!
