Western Washington's high-altitude roads through the Cascades are finally thawing out and opening for the summer. I made it to the Big Four Ice Caves lot this morning. I didn't end up hiking very far, I just enjoyed watching the sun rise while listening to (and recording) the birds.

Big Four in Spring

The Seattle area has mild winters, especially compared to most of the rest of the northern US, but the Cascade Mountains that run down the length of the state can spend half of the year snowed in.Example: the Mt. Baker Ski Area, a few miles further north, had 1,140 inches / 29m of snow during the 1998-99 season. Roads start closing in November and some don’t open until July. One of my favorite signs of spring is the slow progression of roads opening back up, letting me drive further and further into the mountains to take pictures. This week’s big opening was the first segment of the Mountain Loop Highway, which means that I can reach the Big Four Ice CavesAllegedly the lowest-altitude permanent ice in the lower 49 states. The caves are melted into a giant mound of snow and ice that lives year-round at the base of Big Four Mountain. The mound is mostly built up from avalanches that fall off of the side of the mountain; this makes it a spectacularly bad place to play in the snow, especially when high-altitude snow is melting in the spring. Someone dies in an icefall there about once per decade, even though it’s a mile plus hike from the road and there are signs the whole way explaining the danger. without having to hike a few miles up the closed road. The whole area around Big Four Mountain and the caves is covered in waterfalls this time of year. There are at least a dozen falls visible from the picnic area parking lot, if you’re a bit patient and take the time to look. Meanwhile, the whole area near the road is full of birds, frogs, beavers,I didn’t see any today, but last year I had a smallish beaver crawl out of the creek less than 10 feet away from me. We were both pretty shocked when we saw each other. and all of the other things that you find in western Washington wetlands. I was there about an hour shooting, and I only saw (or heard) a couple cars. Here’s a 16 minute chunk of the view; if you un-mute the video then you’ll hear the morning birds and a bit of flowing water. I’m not usually a big audio guy,I watch a surprising amount of video muted with subtitles online. I value the quiet more than I usually value the terrible audio. but this recording makes me happy.
