Tiny Lanterns on a Mossy Wall

It seems the forest wasnโ€™t finished surprising me that day. After finding the tiny Mycena adscendens carrying that oversized droplet, we stumbled across another colony โ€” same species, same walk, different tree. Only this time they were a little larger (a whole 2โ€“3 mm!) and lined up in a perfect vertical row along a mossy trunk, like miniature lamps climbing their way toward daylight.

The challenge? Light. Or rather the lack of it. The forest was still wrapped in that wet, grey, sleepy atmosphere. Since my MP-E 65mm was already pushed to its limits earlier, I switched things up and used the Sigma 24โ€“70mm Art on the Canon 5DsR. Shooting at f/2.8, 1/400, ISO 3200, I had to rely on every bit of available light โ€” and a steady hand โ€” to keep those microscopic caps sharp while letting the background melt into soft mossy texture.

What I love about mushrooms like Mycena adscendens is how easily theyโ€™re overlooked. People step over them every day without ever noticing the tiny worlds unfolding at their feet. But get close enough โ€” really close โ€” and you discover small universes: droplets clinging like glass ornaments, translucent stems glowing against dark bark.

Same forest, same species, same walkโ€ฆ and yet a completely different story.
Thatโ€™s the magic of photography: the world doesnโ€™t repeat itself unless you ask it kindly.

After two weeks away, the journey back home felt almost longer than the trip itself. Unpacking, laundry, sorting things outโ€ฆ you probably know that feeling when vacation ends and โ€œreal lifeโ€ piles up faster than your suitcase ever did. By the end of the day, I was ready for another vacation (not seriously, but you get me ๐Ÿ˜…).

And then, in the middle of the post-trip chaos, a small reminder of home arrived. A lovely little robin hopped into the garden as if to say, โ€œWelcome back, where have you been?โ€ For me, it felt like a quiet celebration: back to familiar surroundings, back to feeding the birds, back to the rhythms of daily life.

Robins have a special place in many cultures. In folklore, theyโ€™re often seen as messengers of hope, new beginnings, and sometimes even as guardians watching over us. Scientifically, theyโ€™re just as fascinating: their red breast is a territorial signal, and theyโ€™re among the few birds that will sing all year round โ€” even through winter, when most others fall silent. Thatโ€™s perhaps why theyโ€™ve long been seen as little bringers of cheer.

This robin, perched patiently, reminded me that home has its own kind of magic โ€” sometimes quieter than a new destination, but just as worth noticing.

Lizards and Grassquits

Darting anoles and a surprise Grassquit.

Face to face with the Marsh #Fritillary. Not the angle at which you usually see this beautiful #Butterfly in photos, but this one presented me with the opportunity for a โ€˜head-onโ€™ portrait so I went with it (and I rather like the result)! Another shot from my visit to the Butterfly Conservation reserves at Prestbury Hill in #Gloucestershire last month.
