"I believe that chasing innovation is toxic and keeps us from really getting to know our patrons and meeting their most pressing needs. We need a major culture change since so many of our organizational structures and values prioritize an innovation agenda. Slow librarianship can provide a route toward more meaningful and impactful technology work in libraries." -Meredith Farkas

Building a Better Library Tech Future with Slow Librarianship - Choice 360

Slow librarianship offers a different perspective of technology in the library—one that emphasizes people and values.

Choice 360

Slow Librarianship is the topic of the day (again) at the Core e-forum. It's been a wonderful two days of discussions and reflection, and we're ready to keep building.

I've created a Discord server for everyone who wants to join the community. DM me for an invite, please!

I just discovered chirp.social and created a Slow Librarianship group over there. Feel free to use this to post along with the a.gup.pe group. It's probably safer to have two aggregated groups, just in case.

Interested in what Slow Librarianship is all about? Already know that but want to create a local community of library workers? Join me and @devononabike as we lead a Core eForum on "Slow Librarianship: A Community of Practice."

This online event is free and open to all library workers. You do not need to be a Core or ALA member to participate.

Come and discuss or just listen in!

Slow Librarianship: A Community Practice

Slow Librarianship is a practice that evolved in response to academic hustle culture but applies to all areas of library work. Julia Glassman coined the term in 2017, and Meredith Farkas, inspired by Julia’s work, has been speaking and writing on the topic since. The term grew at the same time as other social movements, largely in the context of the pandemic. The core idea of valuing quality over quantity is timeless and transcends states of emergency.Slow Librarianship is a quality-over-quantity practice that evolved in response to academic hustle culture but applies to all areas of library work. @librarianmer I think I could get into #SlowLibrarianship !
Hi! 👋 Here's a brief #introduction to me. I'm a community college librarian in Portland, OR. I write a lot about #slowlibrarianship and slow living, the cult of productivity and workaholism, collective care and solidarity, unions, instructional technologies, teaching, EDIA and antiracist work, critical reflective practice and #critlib, and my very zig-zag-y journey through life. I've been blogging at Information Wants to be Free since 2004. https://meredith.wolfwater.com/
Information Wants To Be Free | A librarian, writer and educator reflecting on the profession and the tools we use to serve our patrons

Website of librarian, writer, speaker, consultant and LIS educator, Meredith Gorran Farkas. Includes the popular Information Wants to be Free blog.

My friend and colleague Devon (@[email protected]) listened to me ramble on about community care and self care and the circle of care required for both -- and then asked, "Wait, have you heard of the Ethics of Care?"

HOW HAVE WE NEVER TALKED ABOUT THIS BEFORE, DEVON? 🤯
